The Limpopo Province joined the global community in commemorating this year’s World TB Day with the people of Makonde Village on Friday the 24th March 2017 at Masindi Sports Ground, Thulamela Municipality in the Vhembe District, led by MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba.  The commemoration was attended by communities, leaders, TB patients and their families.  The Department embarked on numerous TB Dialogues across the province which formed part of build-up activities towards the main event in Vhembe.  World TB Day is an opportunity to mobilize political and social commitment for further progress in efforts to end TB in our communities.

The Department aims to address the social and structural drivers of HIV, TB and STI infections and linking them to NDP Goals through partnership with the business leaders and the municipalities to pledge their support for TB and MDR TB program.  At the 2017 World TB Day 2017 commemoration the Department called upon all family members, communities and leadership at all levels to play an active role and support the TB and Drug-Resistant TB patients to complete their treatment.

Those in attendance got an opportunity to hear Avhakholwi Netshidzivhane from Makwarela talk about her journey with MDR – TB since 2016.  Avhakholwi refers to the TB treatment as her 'friend'.  She also encouraged other patients to finish their treatment.

MEC Dr Ramathuba in her keynote address also echoed Avhakholwi’s sentiments.  The MEC encouraged all patients to finish the full course of their treatment. She also cautioned the community against trusting anyone who tells them to stop taking treatment because of any healing powers they allege to have.

The 2017 World TB Day was commemorated under the theme: “Unite to End TB and HIV, South African Leaders Taking Action”.
