POLOKWANE: Employees of Pietersburg hospital who are breast feeding will no longer have to worry about rushing home during lunch times in order for them to breastfeed their babies. This after the department officially opened the Pietersburg hospital "Breastuarant," a breast feeding room at a workplace.

This is the third breastfeeding room which MEC Ramathuba had launched in a workplace-environment in Limpopo Province. Last year, the MEC launched the Albertina Sisulu Breastfeeding Room at the department's head office and another in Sekhukhune District offices. The opening came at a time when South Africa and other countries of the World were commemorating this years World Breastfeeding Week (from the 01th to 07th August).

Ramathuba emphasised the importance of how breastfeeding can promote a better health for both the mother and a baby. "When mothers breastfeed their babies they also decreases the risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease," she said.

According to the World Health Organisation, increased breastfeeding could avert 20 000 maternal deaths each year due to breast cancer. MEC Ramathuba pleaded with the male counterpart and the communities to also support the breastfeeding process. "Breastfeeding is a team effort and to enable effective breastfeeding we all need to protect, promote and support it,"said MEC Ramathuba.

She encouraged employee-mothers to take advantage of the facility and said it will assist in creating a conducive and enabling environment for both the mothers and employer.
